    Do’s & Don’ts for Caregivers

These are things to keep in mind when communicating with your loved one:

    DO give short, one-step directions
DO speak slowly and avoid sudden movements
    DO have positive body language
    DO minimize distractions
    DO allow time for response
DO respond to feelings over words
DO approach them from the front
DO ask questions that have simple "yes" or "no" answers
DO be a good listener and let them know they are important
DO use verbal and visual cues

    DON'T take things personally
DON'T remind them that they forget
    DON'T rush them
DON'T reason, argue, or correct them
    DON'T talk down to them
DON'T ask questions that require recent memory or factual information
DON'T give a lot of choices
    DON'T give orders or demands
DON'T talk about the person as if they aren't there
DON'T say "no" or "don't," even if that's what you mean
DON'T lose your sense of humor!
