Do’s & Don’ts for Caregivers
These are things to keep in mind when communicating with your loved one:
DO give short, one-step directions
DO speak slowly and avoid sudden movements
DO have positive body language
DO minimize distractions
DO allow time for response
DO respond to feelings over words
DO approach them from the front
DO ask questions that have simple "yes" or "no" answers
DO be a good listener and let them know they are important
DO use verbal and visual cues |
DON'T take things personally
DON'T remind them that they forget
DON'T rush them
DON'T reason, argue, or correct them
DON'T talk down to them
DON'T ask questions that require recent memory or factual information
DON'T give a lot of choices
DON'T give orders or demands
DON'T talk about the person as if they aren't there
DON'T say "no" or "don't," even if that's what you mean
DON'T lose your sense of humor! |
