Our Beginnings

Joy’s House founder, Tina McIntosh, first became interested in the idea of opening an adult day service when she volunteered at a center in Muncie, Indiana as a freshman at Ball State University. One Master’s degree and ten years later, she found the courage to leave her successful job as an event planner and began the complicated process of opening an adult day center. As she shared her dream with others, she could see the passion grow inside of them. Before she knew it, people began to support her dream, and many formed the Board of Directors, Board Advisors and committee members for what we now know as Joy's House. Together, they brought Tina’s dream to reality.

People are always asking how we came up with the name Joy's House for our adult day service. We liked the comfort that came with going to visit someone and the idea of what it takes to build a house. It made sense. We knew it was a “house,” but whose house was it? Then one day it just hit us — Joy! Not a person, but a powerful emotion.

After an exhausting couple of years of cleaning houses to make financial ends meet while planning, writing, and applying, the federal government granted not-for-profit status and Joy's House—the organization was born. Tina is never hesitant to share that Joy's House has been a spiritual journey for her. And a higher power guided that difficult yet deeply satisfying year, which has resulted in more tears of happiness and loving relationships than ever thought possible. Anyone who visits Joy's House can easily believe that a higher hand was involved in the creation of such a beautiful place. It is as if, at Joy's House, the normal rules of the universe don't apply. Here, physical perfection doesn't matter ... as Joy's House supporter Theresa Edmondson says, "Everyone is perfect at Joy's House."
